Author Bio

Rhonda Bowen knew she would be a writer as early as eighth grade when she wrote her first

novel with a classmate in a dollar notebook. While waiting for the day to come she completed a

degree in Communications and spent a few years working in Public Relations and Event

Planning. Throughout this time however, her desire to write stayed alive. She eventually

completed her first novel, Man Enough for Me, which was released under Kensington Books’

Dafina imprint in February 2011.

Several years, a stint in Asia and a career change to youth work finds her still writing. She has

written four romance novels and her books have been featured in PUBLISHERS WEEKLY and

LIBRARY JOURNAL. Her latest novel Under Covers was released March 16, 2015. She writes

about the themes of Real Life, Real Love and Real Faith, weaving stories about strong women

who must deal with life and love without losing themselves. Sometimes they succeed, other

times they make a mess of things while trying.

When not writing or being schooled on what’s current by the youth she works with, she enjoys

chilling with her family, trying on shoes she can’t afford, bargain hunting online on Asian clothes

websites and enjoying the great outdoors. Visit her online at http://www.rhondabowen.com ,

Under Covers Excerpts:

Excerpt 1:

The first sign was the milk. The glass bottle hit the ground as soon as she opened

the fridge door. It shattered into a thousand pieces. Naomi’s body went still. She watched

the white fluid seep through her toes and spread across the floor while the feeling of

dread seeped over her stomach.

Her mother always had a thing about milk. She said the milk had been sour the

morning Naomi’s grandfather died. The creamer had leaked all over the fridge the day

her cousin, Marika, lost her baby. And even Naomi, who was usually the more practical

one, couldn’t forget the fly she found floating peacefully in the saucer of white liquid the

night before she lost her job at Whisper. Bad milk was a bad sign – especially the week of

your wedding.

Excerpt 2

She slipped out of the office and down the corridor to her own space. Jordan must

have heard her voice. He leaned lazily against the door frame, looking better in a collared

shirt and jeans than the photo-shopped image of a bare-chested J. Cole that she had seen

just moments earlier. Naomi felt the heat begin at her toes and travel all the way through

her as their eyes locked.

How had she gotten this lucky?

“Good morning, Red.” His eyes devoured her as the distance closed between

them.

“Good morning.”

He pulled her into his arms. Naomi sank into him willingly as he parted her

smiling lips with his.

“Babe, the whole office can see us,” she murmured against his delicious mouth.

“Good.” He kissed her again. “Let them see what Black love looks like.”

Excerpt 3

Naomi rolled her luggage behind her as she headed to check-in for her flight.

“Natasha, you’re making way too big a deal about this,” Naomi tried to sound

rational. “The way I see it, I’ll be in Port of Spain by midday, sort this crap out in twenty

four hours and be back by Thursday night, three whole days before the wedding.”

“And how exactly do you plan to find your sister whom you didn’t even know

was going to Trinidad and has a twenty-four hour head start on you?” Natasha’s heels

clicked as she walked along behind Naomi. “I know Trinidad is small, but it’s still more

than 5000 square miles with over a million people. You got some special resources I

don’t know about?”

Naomi wrinkled her nose but didn’t look at her friend. “Maybe.”

“Maybe?” Natasha echoed. “Like wha…”

Natasha grabbed Naomi’s arm so suddenly, she nearly fell on her behind. But

before Naomi could protest, Natasha had whirled her around to face her.

“Naomi, please tell me you didn’t….”

Naomi couldn’t hold her friend’s intense gaze. “I had to…”

“Oh my God…” Natasha seemed to lose her strength as she sat down hard on

Naomi’s suitcase.

“He’s a police officer, a Sergeant,” Naomi protested. “He can help me find her…”

“He can lead you off a freakin’ cliff,” Natasha hissed. She stared incredulously at

her friend. “Are you seriously this dense that you would even consider having anything to

do with that man again?”

“’Tasha, he’s not that bad….”

“Not that bad?” Natasha screeched. “Have you lost your long term memory? Do

you remember what happened ten months ago? I almost lost you!”

“That wasn’t his fault….”

“It was completely his fault…”

“But things are different now,” Naomi protested.

“They always end up the same when he is around,” Natasha argued. “It was like

that in college, and it was like that last year when he came to visit.”

“But I am different now,” Naomi insisted. “I am not that girl anymore.”

Natasha shook her head. She dug into her purse. “I can’t deal with this. You want

to pour your life down the drain again fine, but someone else will have to supervise it.”

She pulled out her cell phone and dialed. “I don’t have the energy to watch you do

that to yourself again. I’m calling Jordan.”

Excerpt 4

His voice was rough. It hit Naomi like the bark of a tree against her bare back.

When she turned to look at him, she found that he looked just as wild, the uniform and all

it represented did nothing to tame him. Dark eyes, the color of coffee, stood out against

nutmeg toned skin. Naomi had thought that officers were required to be clean shaven, but

with the deep shadow on his square jawline, Naomi saw that Garth still broke the rules.

But the scruffiness didn’t take away from him at all. He was still as handsome as she

remembered. That never changed.

“Garth, wow, a uniform,” Latoya said dryly. “Never seen you in one of those

before. Does it help you remember that you’re a cop?”

“Nice to see you too, Toya.” His tone was dismissive, partly because there was no

love lost between the two of them, but mostly because he was too busy staring Naomi

down. And as she stared right back without flinching, Naomi suddenly knew exactly why

Natasha and Latoya were concerned. Truthfully, they had every right to be.

Waves of hot and cold rushed over her. Her mouth felt dry. Naomi was sure that

at any moment she would start shaking.

Thoughts of a 20 Something Year Old by Tahnee Jones – African Americans on the Move Book Club

Thoughts of a 20 Something Year Old by Tahnee Jones

JUN 2 • UNCATEGORIZED • 309 VIEWS • NO COMMENTS

cover 4Not quite a memoir, but including personal internal issues, the writer chooses to use several animated short stories to describe the different phases of the Black Woman’s life.Thoughts of a Twenty Something Year Old “The Very Essence of Me” is the first book included in a series written from the perspective of well…a twenty something year old black woman. From toxic relationships with both insignificant others and parents, to identity crisis’ and motherhood, each fictional story is written to provoke thoughts of careful self evaluation within each reader. Like life in general, some of the stories and commentary are given remedies from both spiritual and practical aspects, and some are simply left opened ended thus creating a shock effect; but all are tied together with a single touch of advice in between each passage from an anonymous “Wise Woman” as titled who possesses a motherly (or grandmother to younger ladies) type of spirit.
Excerpt from Book:
A Wise Woman one told me, “Baby, don’t be a fool. One decision can lead to a lifetime of pain”
He Said He Would Change
A cold rainy night engulfs a beautiful glowing woman whose belly is swollen full of a little boy and right eye closed with pain. She frantically limps towards a small cozy looking house with its porch light on in hopes of finding a safe haven from the man who helped create the child she now carries. Her knocking is not in vain resulting in a wrinkled chestnut brown woman answering the door and ushering her into the safety of her living room.  The nurturing widow of many years wraps the young woman’s wet bare feet in an electric blanket and tries to calm her in order to find out her circumstance but tears and wailing is all that could be produced. While shivers and shakes control the movement of her body, the battered woman recites over and over, “He said he would change.” Ten months prior to this devastating night, the sweet natured receptionist had made a decision to let her one weakness filter back into her life. Instead of heading to her sister’s advice and ignoring every love letter that her then imprisoned ex boyfriend sent, she chose to embrace and believe the never ending poetry and promises. Thoughts of their prior experiences, the nights of beatings and days of stalking, were simply just pushed to the back of her memory. The seductive yet sweet lines of his handwriting were too good to let pass. Convincing and deceiving all in the same, each letter led a trail to her tender heart which was ready to receive her changed lover. Within the next few weeks her newly changed beau was released from prison and instantly set up a home within her one bedroom apartment. He said he would change, and for the first month he did just that. The once abusive thug became a sensitive romantic man ready to build a life and family with his eye on the prize of fulfillment. Life for the couple was lived in perfect harmony and a month thereafter the news of a new addition was discovered via a home pregnancy test. He was ecstatic; she was overjoyed, they were together in bliss and wedding plans immediately followed. Things suddenly took a sharp turn as soon as morning sickness set in for the newly impregnated bride-to be. Her fiancé’ began to express his dislikes in everything from how she cooked to the way she made the bed. Character assassination from his end to hers soon then transformed into outright blows to her face and swift kicks to her growing tummy. Weeks grew into months with night after night of alcohol driven abuse until one stormy evening when she began to scheme her escape route. As soon as his fist met the side of her face for the second time that night, she swiftly withdrew her grandfather’s switchblade which he had taught her to maneuver with precision as a teenager, from her bra and connected the sharpest end to his neck. Leaving him bleeding on the bedroom floor, she fled without shoes, a purse, or even a jacket to protect her from the bitter winter temperature. The faster she ran the faster the thoughts and regrets raced through her head. Never did she ever suspect that her honest life would turn out in this mess, she was a preachers kid. Why didn’t she listen to her sister and do what her heart knew was right? How could she be so foolish? Would her child have to be raised without her do to a possible capital murder charge? The pain numbs her mind as the unfamiliar but kind old woman escorts her into her home out of the rain as she whispers, “He said he would change.”
tjones headshotTahnee Jones was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma until the age of eleven when her family relocated to Dallas, TX. Her passion for writing has lingered since the tender age of seven years old when she first decided to write poetry and songs, following in the footsteps of her father. Throughout her childhood she was praised by teachers for her literary work but never entered an actually contest until her sophomore year in high school where she won a bronze medal for her poetry in the NAACP ACT-SO competition. In the same competition the next school year, she again was rewarded a bronze medal for her poetry. After encountering some life altering experiences for the worse at the age of seventeen, writing was put on the backburner until she decided to pursue a rap career two years later. The harsh lyrics she wrote from her heart began to take negative effects on her personality as she transformed into someone even her own mother could no longer recognize. Just a few months into her new career, upon finding out she was with child, Ms. Jones knew a decision had to be made between being a stable mother for her child, or continuing in a reckless lifestyle. She chose her child, then shortly after chose to live completely for God leaving everything in her past behind. Just a year after being committed to salvation she was recruited to be a columnist for an internet magazine geared towards Christian teens and continued to contribute until the magazine discontinued. She also worked as a monthly columnist for B.L.O.G. (Beautiful Ladies of Grace) Magazine, her column “Dating for the Cause” focused on being able to maintain integrity while courting in a Christian relationship. Currently Ms. Jones is a contributing writer for Beautifully Said Magazine as well as a monthly columnist for Mane Dame Magazine which is based out of Dallas, TX.  She also serves as Chief of Editorials over the Agape World Harvest International organization as well as organizes several women’s events under the umbrella of Greater Victory Love Outreach Ministries also known as VLOM.  Her time now is devoted being on her post as a youth minister, public speaking, writing novels, and remaining the best mother she can be to her daughter. Inspired by first and foremost the Holy Spirit, she also attributes her inspiration to being a young single mother coming out of the secular world having to stand flat footed for righteousness.
Get to know Tahnee:
  1. What are your favorite topics to write about? My favorite topics to write about would be dealing with emotional issues as a woman because I went through so much in my late teens and early twenties mentally. I always aim to impact women by sharing the wisdom that was given to me by my spiritual leader and God Himself so that they may be able to overcome as well!
  2. So you freelance; why do you enjoy writing for different magazines? I absolutely LOVE writing for different magazine because it gives me the opportunity to impart what I stand for to different audiences. I have been told that I have a gift of being very personable and relatable with my articles and that’s my goal.
  3. How did Thoughts of a 20 Something Year Old come about? Thoughts of a 20 Something Year Old basically started as a blog called “The Essence of Me” in which I developed short stories and posted thoughts in the form of narratives. The purpose of the blog was to provoke black women in thought concerning decisions they may be facing as well as developing an appreciation for being a black woman. One day after a few months I just decided to take it all the way and develop sequels, prequels, and some even “three-quels” as I call them along with extra commentary to help give remedies to the problems in question.
  4. What can we look forward to in terms of the sequel and other projects connected with this book? I’m actually working on the sequel to my book as of right now and aim to have it released by early 2015. Basically, this next book will be from a more mature perspective because I’m older and know how to better handling things. The things I basically whined about in this book with be conquered with a positive mindset in the next. Also, I plan on doing spin-offs of a few stories in “The Essence of Me” which would give the reader the WHOLE background leading up to the dramatic event that takes place in the short story.
  5. So who exactly is the “Wise Woman” as stated so many times throughout the book? The “ Wise Woman” in the book is designed to relate to the reader as any older grand-motherly type figure they might have had in their lives no matter if she was blood related or not. Personally mine is my godmother who is an old church mother (but young in spirit!) who has walked a life of faith and has an unbelievable testimony herself. Most of the quotes are actually the quotes which came from her mouth to my ears many days throughout my twenty-something life. I truly thank God for her!
  6. What is your expectation for the reader’s behalf? The one expectancy that I have for my readers is that they be able to personally relate to at least a few of the characters in one way or another. I desire that many root issues that cause us to stumble in our minds as young women be exposed and dealt with so that we be free!
  7. Can we get a sneak peek of a few topics we will reading about specifically? A few topics featured are of course broken relationships with a man, eating disorders, premature sex, depression as a young mother, and much more!

No one is expecting Shawndrell Ford to be released from prison after being arrested so publically. But now that’s he a free man his only goal is to get back on top with the help of his partner Greedy. But will his own greed be the cause of their demise?

This explosive trilogy takes readers on a masterful journey through the mindsets of those who entrust everything they know and love into the almighty dollar. And in the streets that have no statue of limitation with more enemies than friends, one of these cash connoisseurs are bound to fall victim to all the Sex, Lies, and Betrayal.

1. What or who are some of your inspirations? The inspiration behind my writing is my mother. She was the first person to put a pen in my hand; I just never put it down. And anyone who knows me knows it gets no bigger than Wahida Clark in my little world. I respect what she’s done for literature and giving voices to women who society would have been otherwise cast away. She’s proof you can turn a negative into something very much positive.

2. How did you come up with the concept for Sex, Lies, Betrayal The Façade series?

People call me crazy or they never believe me, but in all honesty it started with a serious case of cold feet. I got engaged at 17 years old and I literally began thinking of everything that could possible go wrong if I considered marriage at such a young age. From there I played with the idea of what I would do in the even that things soured then the pen took on a mind of its own.

3. Where are some of your favorite place to write?

My all time favorite place to write is at my desk. It’s surrounded by my book shelves and its right in front of my window. So every morning I watch the sunrise over both my own little library and the actual library across the street. It’s pure solace. If I’m not there, I’m anywhere it’s extremely quiet and pitch black so that it’s just me and my thoughts.

4. What are some of your hobbies?

My only hobbies are reading, writing, and collecting rare books and watches. I love the concept of time and what it does.

5. What are something to have to have a comfortable writing experience?

I have to have Pulp Fiction playing on my IPOD, radio up on blast for 2 hours only, all my notebooks, favorite pen, and strangely enough my grandmother’s obituary.

6.How did you become a published Author with Leo Sullivan and how does it feel?

Mr. Sullivan was one of the many authors who I’d come across when I was simply a reader aspiring to be an author. I kept up with him on paperback then I was introduced to an e book by accident with his name on the top of the cover. Of course, I was hooked and began one clicking everything and I stumbled across some more amazing reads with his name on it and I had to send over my manuscript. Coming from a botched book contract followed by a self-publishing fiasco. Leo is a breath of fresh air. It feels amazing to be able to work with a veteran of his caliber and be recognized for something I loved doing. It’s an absolute dream come true.

Growing up in Maywood, IL, one of Chicago’s most violent suburbs, Kharisma Kashmere adapted to reading and writing in adolescence. Spending more time inside than out, she became enthralled with urban fiction and suspense at fourteen. Reading her means of escape from the tumultuous city surrounding her, Kharisma decided to start writing about what she thought maybe going on outside her home. The eldest of eleven children, she remembers sharing her stories with sibling who praised her maturing craft. Her husband whom she met at only eleven years old was the person that brought forth the more creative imaginations she pens today. At twenty four, having traveled from Atlanta, Texas, and New York, Kharisma quotes, “I’ve been blessed to have found a passion so deep for writing; I could have seen the world without ever leaving my room. Her first novel, Sex, Lies, Betrayal: The Facade which she penned in Georgia is only the tip of the iceberg, she states. Today she and her husband reside in the Englewood area of Chicago. And she says there’s no place like writing at home.
